Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of New Pickleball Courts at Boettler Park

Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of New Pickleball Courts at Boettler Park

Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of Boettler Park Pickleball Courts is September 13 at Boettler Park, 5300 Massillon Road

Green, OH – It’s dubbed the fastest growing sport in America according to the USA Pickleball Association.  The sport, created in the 1960s, combines many of the elements of badminton, tennis and ping-pong.  On September 13 at 6 p.m., the City of Green Parks and Recreation Division will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting of the first dedicated outdoor Pickleball courts in Summit County.

“We’ve had a dedicated group of pickleballers playing in Green for several years indoors at Green Primary School in winter and in our parks throughout the summer,” said Mike Elkins, superintendent of Parks and Recreation.  “Because the court is a bit smaller with a different net from a tennis court, we decided to convert some of the existing tennis ball courts at Boettler Park into dedicated Pickleball Courts.”

The ribbon cutting will take place at 6 p.m. on September 13, followed by a “celebrity” game of Pickleball to demonstrate and teach this fun, family-friendly game.  Celebrities include Mayor Gerard Neugebauer, Councilman Justin Speight and other community leaders.

“We encourage all to attend to learn another fun game to play with family and friends,” said Elkins.

Two of the four Boettler Park tennis courts were converted to permanent 4 pickleball courts.  The pickleball courts are the size of a badminton court with a shorter net than a tennis court.  The game is played with short paddles, like ping-pong paddles but larger, and a plastic ball with holes, similar to a whiffle ball.  The Parks and Recreation Division will have paddles and balls at the grand opening for families to take a turn at playing a match.
