Summa Health, City of Green Drug Task Force Team Up for Vital Speaker Series

AKRON, Ohio, January 28, 2019 – A three-part speaker series that will examine how the medical profession is evolving to embrace non-narcotic, non-opioid treatment techniques to manage patient pain is planned for the City of Green’s Central Administration Building beginning Tuesday, February 5.

The free Tuesday evening series, entitled Be Drug Safe: Pain Management Today—Understand the Science and Know Your Options, evolves from a partnership between Summa Health and the City of Green Drug Task Force, which, together, recognize the vital importance of the medical profession adopting non-narcotic methods for patients. Speaker series attendees will learn from Summa Health physicians about the efforts they are making in their work to provide care that minimizes patient exposure to potentially addictive pain medications.

The speaker series is as follows:

  •  February 5, 6:30 p.m.: Surgical Pain Meds: Understand Your Options

Thomas Mark, M.D., chair of the Department of Anesthesiology for Summa Health, will talk about how important advancements in anesthesiology are driving new approaches to surgery patients.

  • March 5, 6:30 p.m.: Simple Ways to Reduce Surgery Downtime

Kiel Pfefferle, M.D., Summa Health Orthopedic surgeon, will discuss how the Orthopedic team at Summa approaches pre-operative and post-operative non-opioid pain management.

  •  April 16, 6:30 p.m.: Beyond Drugs: Managing Chronic Pain

Tara Scott, M.D., medical director of Integrative Medicine at Summa Health, will discuss how alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, meditation and massage, are viewed increasingly as important complements to conventional medicine.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for all the programs and the sessions will conclude by 7:30 p.m. The City of Green Central Administration Building is located at 1755 Town Park Blvd. All programs will also be livestreamed at cityof green.org/videos.
