Green Fire Inspector Lt. Keith Geiger offers some clarifications and guidance to local businesses to ensure dividers and partitions to protect employees and customers are fire safe as well.
The State of Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office does not recommend the use of shower curtains in any facility. While effective as a divider, shower curtains are highly flammable and possibly pose a fire safety hazard.
Instead of using shower curtains, Green Fire Division recommends and suggests businesses use a divider constructed with FRP panels to meet the mandated Ohio Department of Health guidelines. FRP panels can be washed and disinfected easily and meet a Class A fire rating.* FRP panels may be purchased as any home improvement store.
• Ensure all fire exits are clearly marked and visible from all areas of the building.
• Consider posting additional fire evacuation plans based on new divider configurations.
• Do not block fire exits.
• See all Ohio Fire Code recommendations regarding barriers from the Ohio State Fire Marshall.
Green Fire Division Fire Inspectors are available to businesses to discuss their COVID-19 modifications to ensure proper fire safety and egress standards are met as well. For more information or assistance, please contact Lt. Keith Geiger at 330-896-6609.
* The FRP panels are a composite product with Class A fire retardant resins that meet a flame spread rating of 25 or less and smoke density under 450 as characterized by the ASTM E-84 Tunnel Test at typical 1/8" glass mat laminate.
