The City of Green is proud of its parks and the many opportunities the division of parks and recreation provides for the residents of our community. With more than 530 acres of diverse park land, providing active and passive recreation opportunities for all residents, it is clear to see why our park system is one of our greatest assets and are valued as a means of enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
Did you know the parks and recreation division serviced more than 240,000 park visitors in 2011. That's right. Among all youth sports activities, special events, school activities, walkers, hikers, fisherman, and general park enthusiasts our parks were well attended in 2011! From all of us in the parks and recreation division thank you for visiting your parks and helping us take great care of them!
The parks and recreation division expanded programming in 2011 and made great improvements to existing programs and events. Sporties for Shorties, a new introductory sports program for children 4-7 was well attended in the spring and this fall. Parent Date Night was successful this fall as well. This event allows parents with young children to enjoy an evening on the town while professional recreation staff engages children in a number of healthy activities. Also new in 2011 was our popular children's summer concert series at Boettler Park, the summer concert series at East Liberty Park, the Patriot's Day Concert, and the annual Veterans Day Ceremony.
We continued partnerships and collaborations with several community organizations to bring to you the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Trout Derby, Youth summer day camps, art-a-palooza, haunted hay wagon rides, and Christmas at Town Park.
In 2012 we will provide more programs and opportunities for residents to enjoy the parks and participate in a leisure or recreation activity. Check back to our web site for new and exciting programs and events for 2012.
From all parks and recreation employees thank you for a wonderful year serving you! We all look forward to a great 2012!
Our parks staff maintains 44 recreation fields and courts for community adult and youth sports leagues. Our staff works with seven locally run youth sport organizations and Green Local Schools to ensure safe, secure areas for play for all participants.
There are more than 6 miles of trails at Southgate Park and Boettler Park and an additional 6 miles of a hike and bike lane on Christman Road near Nimisila Reservoir. Ariss Park and the John Torok Community/Senior Center and Veterans Memorial Park contain a 1/2 mile loop walking track. The parks maintenance staff maintains the city's three cemeteries, all buildings and grounds owned by the city, and the various adopt-a-sites throughout Green.
The parks and recreation staff works with local scouts earning their Eagle Merit Badge and the Gold Medal Award to make improvements to our parks system. A few Eeagle Scout and Gold Medal Award projects include the construction and installation of bat houses, construction of trails and bridges, development of a 9-hole disc golf course, construction and installation of park benches and tree planting, installation of aquatic vegetation for improved aquatic wildlife habitation, and improvements to the Green Veterans Memorial Park, among many others.
