Green's Historic Preservation Commission Designates The Greensburg Cemetery as a local historic landmark

Green, OH - On June 21, 2011, the Green Historic Preservation Commission voted to designate The Greensburg Cemetery, 4890 Thursby Road, as a local historic landmark.

The Greensburg Cemetery was established in 1838 on land donated by early Green settler Peter Thornton and was the site of the first Evangelical church in Ohio. It is also the burial site for at least 70 veterans of the wars of 1812, Mexican, Civil, Spanish and World War I. The cemetery is currently owned by the City of Green.

The commission used a variety of criteria to determine historic landmark status including age of significance (1838-1938), its association with the graves of persons of transcendent importance and its association with historic events.

The landmark application was researched and submitted by the Green Historical Society.  The society's presentation can be viewed in its entirety here: http://www.greenhistoricalsociety.com/3/post/2011/06/greensburg-cemetery-becomes-greens-eighth-local-landmark.html

Other local historical landmarks in Green include the Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse (circa 1880) at Boettler Park; the Klinefelter Cemetery (circa 1812) at the corner of Arlington and E.
