Green, OH – On Sunday, October 5, the community of Green is invited to an open house at Fire Station No. 1, 4200 Massillon Road, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Green Fire Department. At 2 p.m. a short ceremony will be held to recognize the volunteer firefighters who served the community from 1939 – 1980.
“We really want to recognize and thank those firefighter volunteers who served our community from 1939 – 1980 prior to the township creating a full-time fire department,” said Kevin Groen, assistant fire chief, who is organizing the event.
At 2 p.m., there will be brief remarks by Fire Chief Jeff Funai and Assistant Chief Kevin Groen followed by the reading of the names and recognition of the 127 volunteer firefighters who served the City from 1939-1980. Former volunteer firefighter Dan Koontz will also speak and share memories of the department.
“We anticipate 20 or so former volunteer firefighters to attend on October 5,” said Groen.
Currently the Green Fire Division, led by Chief Jeffrey Funai, has 42 firemedics.
