City of Green Receives Third CLG Grant for Hartong House

Green, OH - The City of Green is pleased to announce it has been awarded its third Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant from the Ohio Historical Preservation Office for the Levi Hartong Homestead, located in Southgate Park.  The grant totaling $13,323 will be used for removal of several additions built in the 1970s that are outside the period of significance (1839-1950) for the Hartong House. The removal of these additions will restore the architectural integrity, distinctive shape, and functionality of this Eastlake-style Farmhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In May 2010, the City received a similar grant of $15,272 for architectural and engineering specifications to restore the farmhouse, site and associated outbuildings.  This latest funding award will be used to implement the most critical construction priority as determined by the feasibility study completed in 2009.

"The City has been very intentional about this restoration process.  The 2009 feasibility study determined the direction, the drawings have given us a roadmap, and now we are able to begin actual ‘bricks and mortar' work," said Sarah Haring, community development administrator. "The feasibility study identifies several priority tiers that may take years to address -- but this first project is critical in that it will protect the house from deterioration caused by roof leaks where the original house meets the newer additions."

Since acquiring the property in 2005 with the acquisition of Southgate Park, the City has received more than $42,000 in grant money to conduct a feasibility study, develop architectural drawings and restoration to the property.

The property, while currently not open to the public, is planned to be a trailhead once restoration can be completed and the property upgraded to be ADA compliant.

The Levi Hartong Homestead includes a circa 1883 farmhouse with Eastlake design elements, a  standard Pennsylvania-style barn, which is currently home to the Summit County Sherriff's patrol horses; several out buildings; and the family cemetery of the Grable family who were the first to farm the land before the Hartong family purchased it in 1859.

The City of Green, Ohio, founded in 1992, is a prosperous, progressive and promising city with more than 25,000 residents.  Approximately 33.5 square-miles, Green is located in southern Summit County.    Visit www.cityofgreen.org
