FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

The division of parks and recreation offers something for everyone. From playgrounds to pickle ball you are certain to find something that invites you to participate in a recreation or leisure activity. Green provides for more than 524 acres of protected parkland in 10 city parks.

Southgate Park - 5300 Massillon Road - 205 Acres

Located off Massillon Road in Boettler Park, this park serves as Green’s first nature preserve. Five lakes, rolling meadows, woodlands, pine forest, marshes, and 5 miles of trail make up the 205 acres. Abundant wildlife can be seen from almost any vantage point. Fishing is permitted with a valid state of Ohio ODNR issued permit. All fish caught are to be released immediately. Historical structures dot the southern end of the park with an 1880’s farmhouse and bank barn. Also located in the park is a historical cemetery dating back to the early 1880’s. A 16,000 square foot home is the centerpiece attraction to the property.

Boettler Park - 5300 Massillon Road - 62.5 Acres

Boettler Park is Green’s first recreational park. Popular for it’s scenery the park also provides for several recreation activities including walking (1.2 mile paved trail), tennis, sand volleyball, basketball, soccer, playgrounds, fishing, and picnic shelters. The open areas of the park are perfect for kite flying or model rockets. A historical one room school house adorns the west shore of the fishing pond. A newly created wetland conservation project has introduced a variety of bird species into the park. And the unobstructed view of the evening sky makes it a perfect location for star gazing.

Greensburg Park - 4899 Massillon Road - 27.9 Acres

Greensburg Park is best know for its sport fields. With four lighted baseball fields and a soccer field, Greensburg Park plays host to more than 1,000 contests each year. A concession stand in the park, managed by the Greensburg Lion’s Club, provides much needed refreshments to spectators during the warm days of summer or the cool evenings of fall. A picnic shelter, available for rental and a playground can also be found in the park.

John Torok Community & Senior Center - 4224 Massillon Road - 6.8 Acres

The John Torok Community & Senior Center hosts more than 600 events annually. The meeting room can accommodate up to 70 people. Tables and chairs are provided in the rental fee. A kitchenette equipped with a refrigerator, microwave oven, and coffee maker, is perfect for preparing meals for that special celebration. (No stove/oven is available in the center). A pavilion and playground can also be found in the park. The most frequented walking track in town, the ½ mile loop hard surface trail is a favorite for seniors.

Green Youth Sports Complex - 2500 Greensburg Road - 13.5 Acres

The Greensburg Road Youth Sports Complex has been the destination of families for more than 40 years to watch little league baseball, softball, youth football, and most recently, the game of lacrosse. This property is owned by the Akron-Canton airport and is leased and maintained by the city of Green.

Kreighbaum Park - 3134 Kreighbaum Road - 3.8 Acres

Kreighbaum Park serves the Green baseball and Softball Federation and is a neighborhood park to the residents of Mystic Pointe.

East Liberty Park - 471 East Turkeyfoot Lake Road - 66.8 Acres

Serving the “Shires” this neighborhood park boasts of a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a multipurpose athletic field. The park also has a small lake that is home to a number of species of wildlife. A picnic shelter is planned for this park as well as trail development.

Spring Hill Sports Complex - East Turkeyfoot Lake Road 19.6 Acres

This state of the art soccer complex will serve the Green Soccer Association. This park consists of five regulation size soccer fields, a concession stand, open air pavilion, permanent restrooms, and easy access to state rout 619. Currently under construction, Spring Hill Sports Complex should open for the fall soccer season of 2008.

Ariss Park - Wise Road - 92 Acres

The future home of Bulldog Youth Football and Green Youth Lacrosse, this 92 acre park is the newest addition to the city’s growing inventory of green space. This park is currently in design and is expected to be under construction in the spring of 2008.

Meyersville Fen - Meyersville Road - 26.4 Acres

Meyersville Fen is one of only two fens located in the state of Ohio. We are lucky to have this natural resource in Green. Due to the rarity of fens in the State, the fen will remain as a natural open space and an asset to the City and its’ residents.

In response to a recent survey the recreation staff continues to expand program offerings and increase the number and quality of events which focus on the family and develop a pride for community. Click here for more event and program information.

COMING ATTRACTIONS - DISC GOLF
The City of Green Parks & Recreation Division is planning a new 9-hole Disc Golf course. Each hole will have a sign on the tee-box stating course description, distances, and par. To find out more information, please e-mail us at parks@cityofgreen.org or call 330-896-6621.

What is Disc Golf? Disc Golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee. It shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf and can be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of economic status.
